Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors ranked second in the global eco-friendly vehicle market in the first half of this year. The nation's carmaker duo had announced in June last year their plan to become the combined runner-up in the eco-friendly market by 2020, but they successfully achieved the goal three years earlier than planned.

According to London-based global market researcher HIS Markit, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors sold 102,480 eco-friendly cars globally during the first half of this year, including electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV).

They sold only 45,324 eco-friendly cars in the same period last year, but they have almost reached last year's entire sales record of 107,822 within six months this year.

They sold 9,936 EVs in the first half of this year, up 151.7 percent from the 3,948 cars sold during the same period last year. They also sold 1,792 PHEVs, enjoying a 136.5 percent sales growth in the category, while their HEV sales marked 90,659, a 123.7 percent growth from 40,518 in the same period last year.

Thanks to their steady growth in the market, the nation's carmaker duo ranked fourth in the market in 2015, jumping to third last year, and finally becoming runners-up in the first half this year.

Japan's Toyota sold 598,136 eco-friendly cars during the period, boasting its strong presence in the market. Honda, another Japanese carmaker, sold 80,780 to compete against Korea's two carmakers.

Especially, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors' EV sales stood out on the list this year.

They were No. 11 in terms of global sales last year, but they beat China's Geely, Jianghuai, Chery and Jiangling as well as Germany's Volkswagen this year to take the sixth in the list.

"The global eco-friendly market is still led by carmakers' HEV sales," a Hyundai Motor official said.

"Except for a few developed economies, infrastructure isn't there yet for EVs in global scale. Therefore, HEV sales are a key determinant in the eco-friendly market. Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors have diversified their HEV lineup for years. Especially, the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid compact sedan, Kia Niro hybrid SUV and Hyundai Sonata hybrid sedan have been well received in overseas markets this year."
Hyundai Motor Group said it will expand its eco-friendly portfolio by introducing a new next-generation fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) model next year.

On Aug. 17, the nation's largest carmaker showcased the FCEV model, which features Hyundai's latest technologies in fuel cell electric systems and connected cars. Hyundai Motor said it will reveal a new level of technology in efficiency, performance and durability, greatly improved from its existing Tucson FCEV.

The new FCEV model targets to travel 580 kilometers on a full charge while producing a maximum 163 horsepower. Its performance is expected to be a 20 percent improvement over the Tucson.

Thanks to the carmaker's highly durable core auto parts, drivers can start the new FCEV model's engine even at minus 30 degrees Celsius. Confident of the model's durability, Hyundai Motor offers a 10-year or 160,000-kilometer warranty, the official added.
